Since the first inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup was held in China in 1991, the sport has gained a lot of popularity. Many women’s football teams have popped up all around the world since then. As a matter of fact, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final that was played in Canada in 2015 is one of the most-watched football games in US history.
Brief History
Evidence suggests that women have been playing football for as long as the game existed. In 1921 however, there was a ban by the Football Association. The reasons they offered were not justifiable but times have since changed. In 1971 the ban was lifted and it was not until 2008 that the FA issued a formal apology for the ban.
After women rights began to be recognised, women started to express interest and even show case their talents. There have been many tournaments since then that are played both nationally and internationally. It has become a loved sport that draws thousands of both male and female fans from all over the world.
Women’s Football Today
The 21st century has brought about equal opportunities for all genders. Girl’s football is no longer something that most people would find odd. However, there is still a long way to go. This is evident in the fact that women’s pay and overall opportunities are still significantly lower than their male counterparts.
