Cardiff City Football Club: History for men and women players

Cardiff City Crest

Cardiff City FC has always been the team we love, the team we support, but how much do we know about the rich history that brought us this historical club? Join us in a look back at our shared journey. Clwb Pêl-droed Dinas Caerdydd, as we are known in Welsh, was founded as the Riverside Athletic Football Club in 1899.

From Humble Beginnings Great Glory Came

At the founding, football wasn’t even the focus of the club, the purpose was to keep the cricketers of the Riverside Cricket Club in shape on the off-season. Who could have predicted FA Cup glory less than 30 years later? Indeed in 1927, after being losing finalists the year before, Cardiff lifted the FA Cup on Wembley’s hallowed turf.

Sadly, these heights would not be replicated, and Cardiff City’s only successes would be in late stages of knockout cup competitions, and first tier league glory was never destined. Or better, maybe, never yet. Like the FA Cup win of yesteryear, who can tell what the future holds for our club? Maybe the ladies have the key?

Cardiff City Ladies Football Club Keeps Striving and Working

Looking ahead, it is clear that Cardiff City Football Club has stood the test of time. With a loyal following prompting an increase in capacity to over 30,000, this is a club on the up and it is fair to say that we may soon be competing in the top tier of all competitions.
